Dictated at birth, we have no
influence over our
ancestors, skin color or sexual orientation. These same
categorizations,
used
to ‘establish’ personal identity, can later produce life threatening or
mitigating
circumstances, depending on which
river bank of political
thinking we find
ourselves on. The abuse of concepts of identity centered around
‘difference’ or
‘the other’ always stigmatizes
individuals or groups and inevitably produces
social marginalization. In this way, modern
political establishments,
through
their use of the media, have promoted the notion of ‘other’ as a modern
definition of
‘enemy.’ It is through this
manufactured concept of ‘difference’
that moral justification is sought for inflicting
violence towards fellow human
beings.
